Dennis James Castro

It is with heavy hearts and profound love, we remember Dennis J. Castro, (Cookie) who peacefully passed away on August 3, 2026, at McHenry Hospital surrounded by his family. Born on December 8, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois, Dennis lived with courage and grace, despite the challenges he faced with gastric complications.

The cherished son of the late Gabriel A. Castro and Rosalie T. Castro, Dennis was the beloved brother to the late Donald G. Castro, Raymond J. Castro, and Richard W. Castro. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of his surviving family: his devoted wife, Gennette Castro, and his treasured siblings, Dianna L. (Clarence) Stukes, Joseph G. (Rosa) Castro, Doreen R. (Simcha) Aviram, and Dolores D. (Howard) Whatmore.  His spirit lives on in his nieces and nephews Ayana (Will), Sabriya (Eric), Jessica (Scott), Nicole (Chad), Trevor, Stephanie, Donnie, and his cousins, Loretta and Donna.

Dennis found his soulmate and joy in Gennette Bristol.  Their union on October 24, 2025, marked the beginning of a beautiful chapter. Together, they cultivated a life filled with small joys—whether tending to their vegetable garden, enjoying Bingo nights, or sharing laughter with their beloved pets, Carmel and Taz.

A proud alumnus of St. Angelus Catholic School and Steinmetz High School, Dennis pursued higher education at Triton College, majoring in Criminal Justice. His work at Follett Content Solutions in McHenry, Illinois, was more than a job; it was a source of happiness, enriched by the company of colleagues he deeply cared for.

Dennis’ faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding his journey with unwavering devotion. His hobbies reflected his zest for life; from sharing the harvest of his garden, enjoying Wednesday bingo nights, to fishing with his brothers and nephews. Dennis was happiest in nature, often cycling to the park to savor the quiet moments by the lake, relishing the simple beauty of life. His enthusiasm for music was infectious, often brightening the days of his siblings and friends with shared tunes and videos. He always connected with his brother Joe on the phone from stats of the various Chicago sports teams, or to talk about how great his job was going.  Dennis and his sister Dolores loved playing the old sitcoms and spent time laughing.  He never forgot to always chime in with his sisters Doreen and Dianna to keep them updated on his daily life activities.      

He was a fervent supporter of Chicago sports.  He was resolute in his beliefs.  Dennis’ passion for the Cubs was legendary. His joy in those victories was a testament to his loyalty and his infectious zest for life. He would send out the Cubs song to each of his family members and friends after each win.  

Dennis loved to cook, and he was an excellent chef. He made dishes that his siblings and he grew up with like chicken adobo and rice and pot roast., Dennis loved his nieces and nephews. His niece Nicole would remind him of how he taught her how to drive before she even had her permit.  At family parties, he always joined in on a game of volleyball or water balloon fights with all the nieces and nephews and would make them laugh.  He even picked up the golf club and had a few swings with the kids off the driving pad.   That was our Dennis.  

A service to honor Dennis’ life will be held on August 16, 2026, at McHenry VFW Post 4600, located at 3002 IL Route 120, McHenry, Illinois from 11:00am to 3pm.   In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the JFW Gastric Cancer Foundation in memory of Dennis’ brave battle. 

As we gather to celebrate Dennis’ life, we hold dear the moments and memories that have left an indelible mark on our hearts.  May his spirit continue to inspire us, and may we find comfort in knowing that he pains no more and is now at peace forever remembered and cherished.
