Alfred (Fred) Lloyd Roberts

93, of Schaumburg, Illinois (formerly Tuckahoe, New York), passed away at Bella Terra nursing facility on December 4, 2024 after a 2 year battle with interstitial lung disease. Fred was born on June 14, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois to Robert and Violet (Goddard) Roberts. He had 2 brothers, Russ (Jerry) Roberts and Ronald (Mary) Roberts. He attended Lakeview High School in Chicago. He was married to Hope Peterson in 1951 and they had 2 children, Ava and Mark. Fred’s talents were apparent while attending high school when he performed the Rachmaninoff 2nd Piano Concerto at such a young age. Fred later studied at Juilliard where he furthered his passion for music. He spent over 60 years as a piano teacher where he taught children and adults of all abilities. He was known to volunteer his time and talents for anyone that wanted to learn the piano. There were many of his students that went on to attend prestigious music institutions. Fred spent 40 years as the president of the Pompton Valley Music Teachers Association, Pomptom Lakes, New Jersey. Fred also had a passion for New York City! He loved the culture and the museums. He saw many concerts and theatre productions with his lifelong partner of 50 years, Bud Laurie. Together they experienced all that New York City had to offer. They often enjoyed a good glass of wine at Tavern on the Green or Top of the Sixes; and many times you could find them watching the ball come down on New Year’s Eve right in Times Square. Fred made his health a priority. He would bike and hike all over; well into his 80’s. He studied Tai Chi and Transcendental Mediation. You could still find him on a treadmill a few times a week in his early 90’s since he could no longer withstand the outdoor elements. In fact, when he was being transferred to a long term care facility; all he wanted to know was if they had a gym! He refused to give into the lung disease! Fred also was an avid reader. He loved science and history; but most of all Fred loved his family. He loved spending time with grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. Fred was very proud to have served in the United States Navy. He served during the Korean Conflict on the USS White Marsh LSD-8. There was always a piano on the ship to entertain his fellow sailors and officers as well. Fred is survived by his daughter, Ava Roberts of Schaumburg, Illinois; daughter-in-law Ann Roberts of New Rochelle, New York; grandchildren Rachel Roberts, Dawn (Ernie) Hoffman, Brian Wallace; great-grandchildren Madyson, Zane, Kaleb and Keegan Hoffman. He was preceded in death by both his parents, both of his brothers, his life-long partner (Bud), his son (Mark), and his great-grandson (Reed). Fred will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the nursing staff at Bella Terra as well as the staff from Ascension Hospice for your warm and compassionate care. There will be a private burial at a later date.
