John William Scott, 58 of Highwood, Illinois, died suddenly of natural causes in his home on March 18th, 2025. He was born on July 15th, 1966 in St. Benoit-La-Forte, France at US Army Chinon Hospital to John Edward Scott and Lynne Alphonsine Scott. John grew up with his three siblings living the worldwide adventure of an Army family. The second child of four, he and his older sister Linda, younger brother Ted, and younger sister Nancy had each other as they switched through a myriad of different schools as a result of their father’s relocation to various duty stations. Their last move was to Fort Sheridan, where he attended Northwood Junior High and later Highland Park High School. John worked many years at Pierantoni’s in Highwood. He worked for 20 years for Signs Now in Highland Park, and most recently as the Production Manager at IC Signs and Graphics for the past 9 years. John had a wealth of knowledge of Highwood and Highland Park’s history and had many friends in the community. He was an avid collector of many things and had many hobbies. He enjoyed metal detecting and found many “treasures and artifacts” over the years when he’d do so. He was an avid cyclist and loved to ride his E-Bike. He loved music, playing oldies for people in the car- whether they wanted to hear them or not- on his trips to see family in Iowa and Michigan. John also enjoyed fishing and cherished the memories he made when camping and fishing in the Pacific Northwest with his best friend Paul Coorlin. He also enjoyed debating politics with friends and family, always doing so with a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face. He loved conspiracy theories and discussing the obscure. John is preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, and an infant nephew, Robert Scott. Left to cherish John’s memory are his sister Linda (Jim) Medlang of Northwood, IA, his brother Theodore Scott of Antioch, IL, and his sister Nancy (Mark) Schucart of Gurnee, IL, four nieces Jessica (Scott) Butler, Sonya Medlang, and Nicole Scott, and Jane Schucart, two nephews, James William Medlang and Thomas Scott, his uncle and aunt, Mike and Kathy Scott of Bloomfield Hills, MI, many cousins in California, France, and Michigan, and five great nieces and nephews, and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

John Joseph Valverde, "JJV", passed away peacefully on February 20, 2025 at the age of 96.  He was born on December 24,1928 in Maturin, Venezuela while his parents were vacationing.  The family returned to the States shortly after his birth. John was raised in New York City where he attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School before graduating from Commerce High School in 1946. After graduation, John moved to Venezuela to help establish a family business, which grew into a great success. In 1951, John was drafted into the U.S. Army and served with honor during the Korean War until 1953. Upon his return to New York City, he met the love of his life, Louise Hazen. They were married at the "Little Church Around the Corner" in Manhattan on December 22, 1956.

John embarked on a successful career in finance, beginning as Treasurer at Dancer Fitzgerald, an esteemed advertising firm where he was among the original "Mad Men" of Madison Avenue. He and Louise built a beautiful life together, raising their four children—Katherine, Thomas, and twins Elizabeth and Virginia—in Chappaqua, NY. In 1973, the family relocated to Barrington, IL, where John continued his career as Chief Financial Officer and Senior Partner at Tatham-Laird & Kudner, a Chicago advertising agency.  Their years in Barrington were filled with cherished friendships, golf, tennis, family activities, and lively gatherings, especially his golf group, The Panzers- where lifelong friendships were made and too many fun stories to tell.

At the age of 60, John retired, and he and Louise moved to Ocala, Florida, where they embraced a new chapter of life. He made wonderful friends, enjoyed countless rounds of golf—proudly shooting his age four times—and remained a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. John was known for his boundless spirit, zest for life and tenacious can-do attitude.  His lifelong motto of "mind over matter" served him well in his personal life and his successful business career.

John is predeceased by his beloved wife, Louise; his parents, Librado and Ramona; his brothers, Joe (Lucy) and Hector (Theresa) and his sister, Mary (Luigi). He will be deeply missed by his children, Katherine Greenberg (Harvey), Tom Valverde (Kelly), Liz Desmond (Bob), and Virginia Kinker (Todd). He is lovingly remembered by his ten grandchildren, Ashley, Sara, Mark, Madeline, Johnny, Matthew, Michael, Maggie, Clay, Robby, and five great-grandchildren. 

We will always remember him with a smile on his face, twinkle in his eye, and a good glass of scotch in his hand.    A celebration of life will be held on March 2, 2025 for immediate family.

Jan Berghorst, 89 of Downers Grove, Illinois died peacefully surrounded by family on February 9, 2025.  She was born Janet Rose Drennan, on June 23, 1935, in Okemos, Michigan. She came from a multi-generational musical family, and music was a huge part of her life as a music educator, choral conductor, and church choir vocalist.  Jan received a Bachelor’s degree in music education and a Masters degree in choral conducting from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where she lived for many years and raised her children.  Throughout her life, Jan was very involved with volunteer work and Mission work with her churches. She moved to Downers Grove, Illinois in 2019 to be closer to family. She was an avid walker and loved spending time with her family and friends. Jan loved being near the lake, and her favorite place was Crystal Lake in Frankfurt, Michigan.  She was preceded in death by her Mother, Edith Vliek, her Father, Harry G. “Red” Drennan, her brother, Ed Drennan, and nephew Randy Drennan.  She is survived by her three children Marti (Rob), Jodi, and John (Nora), her five grandchildren Shelby, Justin, D, Jackson, and Max, and her niece Leslee and nephews Brad and Jeff.  Jan will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.

Fred Roland Conradt

The family of Fred Roland Conradt of Bensenville is saddened to announce his passing on February 4th at the age of 75 years.

Fred was born in Germany to Hans and Hilda Conradt on December 12, 1949. Eldest brother to Christa Conradt and Linda Maher. 

Fred enjoyed fishing, reading, gardening, wood working and painting. Fred was a craftsman, and his career was dedicated to the fiberglass industry.  

On March 27th, 1981 Fred married the love of his life Ruth. Was a loving father of Shannon and husband David; Jackie and fiancée Donald; and Jeff and fiancée Kelly to Freds eldest daughter Cynthia. Caring and devoted grandfather to Katlyn and Brett Zielinski and Savannah Conradt. 

Celebration of life will be the first weekend of April 2025, details to come.

Brian William Rossmann, 61, of McHenry, passed away in Park Ridge on Friday, January 30th, 2025, after a long illness. He was born April 2nd, 1963, to William and Sandra Rossmann. He grew up in McHenry and graduated from McHenry High School in 1981. Afterwards he attended McHenry County College and enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. 

Brian worked as a mechanic and semi-truck driver for TC Transportation in Crystal Lake. He loved books, he was an avid learner. He enjoyed technology, movies, and bike riding. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. 

He is survived by his sister, Kelly (Wayne) Braun, and numerous other friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Rossmann; his mother, Sandra Rossmann; and his brother Kevin Rossmann.

In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the Huntington’s Disease Foundation.

Stuart D. Smith, 67, passed away on December 10th, 2024 at his home in Highland Park with his wife, son, and daughter present. He had fought an almost 5 month battle against Glioblastoma Brain Cancer. 

Husband to Andrea B. Smith for 43 years, together for 49 years. They met the first week of Freshman year at Drake University. Father of Diana A. Smith, and Benjamin D.F. Smith(wife Caitlin Hanson). Son of David and Peggy Smith. Brother of Andrew Smith and Amy Heinhuis. 

Stuart will always be remembered for his sense of humor and kindness, and for his love for his family, books, music, baseball, and his beloved cat, Sampson.

A celebration of life will be held at The Smith residence on December 22nd, from 1:00-6:00p.m.

Alfred (Fred) Lloyd Roberts, 93, of Schaumburg, Illinois (formerly Tuckahoe, New York), passed away at Bella Terra nursing facility on December 4, 2024 after a 2 year battle with interstitial lung disease. Fred was born on June 14, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois to Robert and Violet (Goddard) Roberts. He had 2 brothers, Russ (Jerry) Roberts and Ronald (Mary) Roberts. He attended Lakeview High School in Chicago. He was married to Hope Peterson in 1951 and they had 2 children, Ava and Mark. Fred’s talents were apparent while attending high school when he performed the Rachmaninoff 2nd Piano Concerto at such a young age. Fred later studied at Juilliard where he furthered his passion for music. He spent over 60 years as a piano teacher where he taught children and adults of all abilities. He was known to volunteer his time and talents for anyone that wanted to learn the piano. There were many of his students that went on to attend prestigious music institutions. Fred spent 40 years as the president of the Pompton Valley Music Teachers Association, Pomptom Lakes, New Jersey. Fred also had a passion for New York City! He loved the culture and the museums. He saw many concerts and theatre productions with his lifelong partner of 50 years, Bud Laurie. Together they experienced all that New York City had to offer. They often enjoyed a good glass of wine at Tavern on the Green or Top of the Sixes; and many times you could find them watching the ball come down on New Year’s Eve right in Times Square. 

Fred made his health a priority. He would bike and hike all over; well into his 80’s. He studied Tai Chi and Transcendental Mediation. You could still find him on a treadmill a few times a week in his early 90’s since he could no longer withstand the outdoor elements. In fact, when he was being transferred to a long term care facility; all he wanted to know was if they had a gym! He refused to give into the lung disease! Fred also was an avid reader. He loved science and history; but most of all Fred loved his family. He loved spending time with grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.

Fred was very proud to have served in the United States Navy. He served during the Korean Conflict on the USS White Marsh LSD-8. There was always a piano on the ship to entertain his fellow sailors and officers as well. Fred is survived by his daughter, Ava Roberts of Schaumburg, Illinois; daughter-in-law Ann Roberts of New Rochelle, New York; grandchildren Rachel Roberts, Dawn (Ernie) Hoffman, Brian Wallace; great-grandchildren Madyson, Zane, Kaleb and Keegan Hoffman.

He was preceded in death by both his parents, both of his brothers, his life-long partner (Bud), his son (Mark), and his great-grandson (Reed). Fred will be greatly missed by all who knew him. 

The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the nursing staff at Bella Terra as well as the staff from Ascension Hospice for your warm and compassionate care. 

There will be a private burial at a later date.

Synnøve Løvold Olimb,  

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Synnøve Løvold Olimb on Sunday, December 1, 2024.  She was everything to us & her loss truly breaks our hearts.  

Synnove lived a long life, celebrating her 91st birthday this past November 18th.  She leaves behind a son, Jon Olimb, and a daughter, Anne Kristin Olimb, and countless other relatives in Norway, Canada & Sweden. Born in Norway, she came to the U.S. in 1968, joining her parents (Berte Helene & John Arthur) who had emigrated to Canada in the '50s, the U S. in the '60s, and then retired to Norway in the late '70s.

For many years Synnove worked in the Insurance industry, but her love of Norway shone through in her dedication to the preservation of all things Norway & Norwegian.  This included everything from the language, daily meals & traditions to the participation in local craft shows, including the Annual 17 Mai Festival every May at Hodges Park, in Park Ridge, IL., where she was very well-known & respected among both the other participants & attendees alike.

Synnove's talent for knitting & creating authentic Norwegian selbuvåtter (mittens), strikkejakker (sweaters), strikkesokker (socks), sameluer (Sami hats), as well as sewing complete, authentic norske bunader (Norwegian national costumes) was truly amazing, but not surprising since she first began knitting in Norway at the tender age of 3!!

Our hearts are broken that she has had to leave us and we'll never be the same again.

Thank you to all our wonderful family & friends who have & continue to be as supportive as you've been during this very difficult time.  

There will be no viewing, as Mamma was cremated and will be returning to her native Norway in the future to be buried next to or near her parents in Southern Norway.

Theresa DiMare Mullins, 69, of Bloomingdale, IL, died of cancer on October 22nd, 2024.

Theresa was born in Ashtabula, Ohio on July 7th, 1955, to Stephen and Christine DiMare, one of five daughters, Barbara DiMare (Cortland, OH), Cynthia Zigmund (Silver Lake, OH), Patricia Allen (Sun City, FL), and Stephanie DiMare (deceased). She attended Ashtabula Harbor High School before majoring in Nursing at Kent State – Ashtabula and Youngstown State University. Theresa dedicated her career to helping others as a registered nurse across the hospital, school (Lakeview School District), and at-home setting. 

Theresa enjoyed traveling & hosting family gatherings, but most of all loved spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren. She will be missed most for her friendship and thoughtfulness. 

Theresa is preceded in death by her parents, Stephen & Christine DiMare, sister Stephanie DiMare and is survived by her husband, Bob Mullins (Bloomingdale, IL), daughter, Christina & Matt McGleam, grandchildren Abby, Charlotte, and Grant (Chicago, IL), and son, Jonathan Mullins & Stasi Gomez, grandchild Caroline (Westminster, CO). 

The family will honor the memory of their beloved wife, mother, and grandmother by holding a celebration of life ceremony in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Pink Lights the Way organization.

Richard W. Moretti (Dick), age 90 of Prospect Heights, IL passed away peacefully on Friday, September 13, 2024. He was surrounded by his family – wife, Cathy of 65 years, daughter, Michelle Lewis, son-in-law, Neil Lewis and both granddaughters, Amanda Lewis (Minnesota), and Samantha Lewis (Chicago). He is survived by his brother, Ron Moretti and his wife Barbara of Wisconsin, brother-in-law, Leonard Lencioni who resides in Texas and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He also adored his grand dog, Lily and his two grand cats Puppy and Wabi. Thirty-two years ago a Cousins Club was started where they all got together every few months and celebrated at a family restaurant dinner. He owned three service stations where he did repairs, sold gas, towing and special services. First one in Skokie, then Chicago and lastly in Morton Grove. He was an Army veteran which he was so very proud of. He loved the outdoors, built an A-Frame in Wisconsin where he loved to hunt and fish. He was always fixing something and thinking of ways he could always make things work better. He traveled to Italy with his entire family which was a real highlight in his life. He was always surrounded with very many good friends, family and relatives. He truly enjoyed life, always found a way to make everyone laugh. His family meant everything to him.

Visitation will be Saturday, September 28, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Liguori Church, 411 N. Wheeling Road, Prospect Heights, IL 60070 with mass immediately following at 11:00 a.m.
