Mary Lovejoy Sweet, resident of Arlington Heights, Ill., and past resident of Des Plaines, Ill., and Janesville, Wis., passed away Aug. 28 at the age of 80. She leaves behind a husband, Elmer; three children: Robert (Marcia) Sweet, Maria (Kevin) Jacobs, and Elizabeth Sweet; four grandchildren: Nicholas Keriazakos, Jordan Sweet, Joshua Sweet, and Grace Jacobs; two sisters: Julia Weiser and Katherine (Dale) Berman; one brother: Allen (Heather) Lovejoy; one brother-in-law: James Waeffler; six nieces; three nephews; and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Mary was preceded in death by a son, John Sweet, and a sister, Alexandra Waeffler. Mary was born July 30, 1944, in Janesville to Robert and Margaret Lovejoy. Over the course of her busy and productive  life, she worked as a teacher and a day-care manager, traveled extensively, and made many friends.  She always had a quick and  encouraging word for anyone who needed one., Mary inspired many fond memories in family and friends. 

A memorial service celebrating Mary’s life is planned for Saturday, September 21st at 10:00 AM at the Moorings of Arlington Heights. In Lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made  to the National Alliance on Mental Illness or the American Brain Tumor Association.

Kevin R. Connolly,

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kevin R. Connolly who left us on May 30, 2024 at the young age of 67. Loving Partner to Jaffett Thomas, Son of Ralph Connolly and the late Thea Connolly. Cherished brother of Eva (Bruce) Regione, Jennifer (Ron) McGinnis.

Preceded in death by Keith (Suzanne) Connolly. Beloved Uncle to Cynthea (Joseph) Sloan, Peter Regione, Michael (Maureen) Connolly, Lisa ( Trevor) O'Claire, Kyle Connolly, Sean McGinnis, Allison (Zak) Rico, Casey McGinnis. Great Uncle to many grand nieces & nephews. 

Kevin had a big heart, a generous spirit and was always ready with a warm hug. He will be missed by family and friends alike.

Michael R. Schmidt passed away on May 29, 2024, at the age of 71 in Deerfield, IL. He was born on November 16, 1952, in Chicago, IL. and raised in Mt. Prospect. Michael was known for his career in computer and front desk sales and inventory for a plumbing supply company. In his free time, he loved traveling the world with Jim, reading and exploring history. He also had a passion for cooking and baking. A city boy at heart, he loved living in Chicago where he resided most of his life until he moved out to Deerfield to stay with his sister, brother- in law and niece.  Michael is survived by his daughter Amy Fligel, brother Jeffery (Shari) Schmidt, sister Diane Burns, and sister Susan Powers. Loving grandfather to Abby and Alex Fligel and Beloved uncle to many. Dearest friend to, James (Jimmy) Grant and Greg Ortega. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law Terry Burns, nephew Michael Burns, parents, Rudy and Lola Schmidt, grandparents Idabelle and Henry Devinger, and Emma and Raymond Schmidt.

A Celebration of Life to honor Michael will be held on July 20, 2024, 11:30-3:00, at 20817 Maple Ct. Deerfield IL. Food will be served at noon and any and all are welcome to stop by to share a drink, a story or just to say a hello.  As he begins his newest journey, we hope he will once again find something unique that intrigues him!

Michael J. Burns, 51, of McHenry, Illinois, passed away on May 22, 2024. He was born on January 11, 1973, in Park Ridge. He is survived by lifelong partner Kelly Sikula. Beloved father of Michael (Mikey) Burns Jr., loving brother to siblings, Heather (Nick) Kapande, Sarah Burns, Brittanny (Travis) Smith and Zachary (Hannah) Lamothe. Dearest son of Diane Burns, preceded in death by his father, Terry Burns and mother, Pam Deal. Caring Uncle to Dane (Haley), Troy, Brooklynn, Wesley, Jamison, Faith, Hunter, Lincoln, Rory and new Great Uncle to Lily. Loving nephew to Jeff (Shari) Schmidt, Susan Powers, and his cousins. 

Born In Park Ridge and raised in Wheeling and Deerfield, Michael attended Stevenson High School and later pursued the culinary arts at Triton College. Mike went on to be a baker, a property owner and most importantly to him, a Father. Dedicated to his family and a man who loved numbers; he had an elephant’s memory like his Dad and a smart wit about him. He was always right, always wanted to win, and always tried to be the “funny” guy. We sure will miss that sarcastic humor of his.

Patti Jo Wissig (Norris), Born July 6th,1955, passed away on May 3, 2024. Patti was Born and raised in the City of Chicago with her brother Bobby (Robert), and her sisters Lynette and Vickie Mooney. She had a wonderful relationship with her Step-Father Robert Mooney who she called Dad. While growing up in the city, at the age of 12, she met the love of her life and eventual husband Wolfgang where they were married almost 50 years before his passing in 2021. Patti's love for Wolfie was unwavering. During their relationship they had 3 sons; Gary, Jim, and Ron.

Patti and Wolf moved to Elk Grove Village in 1978 with their 3 boys. She was a Resident of Elk Grove for the next 46 years. When she moved to Elk Grove she operated an in-home daycare in the community for 16 years. In 1991 she started as a part time customer service rep for Kohl's. Her determination and drive made her the first employee of Kohls to start as a part time employee and work herself up all the way to store manager. She was very passionate about her work and her family. Patti was a strong, loving, caring wife to her Wolfie and there wasn't anything she wouldn't do for her 3 boys. Her favorite thing to do was spend time with her 2 grandchildren (Payton,& Macey,) whom she loved more than anything. She would take vacation time from work to go on adventures with them. Payton and Macey LOVED their OMA!

She is preceded in death by her Parents Robert Mooney, and Jo Norris, her Brother Bobby Norris, Her sister Lynette, and her Husband Wolfgang. She is survived by her sons Gary(Shannon), Jim(Deane), Ron, and her Grandchildren Payton and Macey. Also surviving are her Brothers in law Jurgey (Cathy), Rick (Lydia) as well as her cousins Karen, Julie and Mike, her Nieces Haley and Jessi and Nephew Gabe. 

There will be a Private celebration of life at a later date to be determined.

Marilyn Louise Ehrlich, Marilyn Rinker Ehrlich-LaFond born September 30,1933 in Iowa and died in Illinois April 19, 2024 at the wonderful age of 90. She had a long life filled with many laughs and some heartfelt tears. She was married to Donald C. Ehrlich who preceded her in death. They lived in Lombard and had three children Victoria (Carl) Mueller, Karen (Michael) McAdams, and Craig (Rhonda) Ehrlich. She worked for A.C.Bueller Library at Elmhurst University for over 30 years and had a wonderful love of reading supported by Elmhurst Public Library, Helen Plum Public Library, and Wood Dale Public Library. She also loved going to the movies and challenging family members to trivia games involving movies and their stars. In later years, watching black and white movies became her passion. She is survived by a large, loving family. Her beloved Grandchildren: David Stout, Breanne (Jeff) Bynes, Meghann (Jim) Thomas, Brandon (Kelsey) Mueller, Carli (John) Russo, Michele (Justin) Bitkus, Bret (Jenelle) Ehrlich, Kathleen Ehrlich.

Beloved Great-grandchildren: Maddi, Ryan, Zakk, Aiden, Payton, J.J, Theo, Laina, Tucker, Tanner, Brinley, and Haidyn. Beloved Great-great-grandchild: D.J. Her beloved sister: Barbara (Tony) Testa, Beloved nieces, and nephews: Christi (Dale) Choyeski, Tracey (Mark) Campolattara, Claudia (Dan) Yangas, Rick Ehrlich, Lee (Hollis) Ehrlich-Blair, and Jeff Ehrlich and their children. Her cousin Linda (Butch) Van de Walker and many second cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Esther Rinker, a baby sister, and her grandson: Christopher Stout.

She was gifted with another family when she married Armand “Bud” LaFond in 2001 after years of

togetherness. After their marriage Bud’s children became her step-children and she thought of them as her own. The additions to her already large family were his children: Linda (Phil) Wallace, Armand

(Brenda) LaFond, Arlette Krempasky and Douglas (Lisa) LaFond, step-grandchildren: Angela (Marcus) Sullivan, Greg Wallace, Katie (Erik) Schulze, Timothy Wallace, Brittany Krempasky, Christopher (Jenna) Wallace, R.J. Krempasky, and Jessica (Andrew) White and step-great-grandmother of Nathan, Jason, Norah, Trevor, Alex, Adelynn, and Lucas. Marilyn and Bud had been married over 20 years when he died in December, 2023.

Services have not been planned yet; however, internment will be in the family plot at Elm Lawn

Frazer Estey Pahlke, a resident of Deerfield, IL, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at the age of 83. Frazer was born in Chicago on August 29,1940 to Howard and Lillian Pahlke. He worked as an engineer in the Chicagoland area his entire life and was recognized for his hard work, skills, and discipline in his profession. Frazer was very skilled in working on various systems including HVAC and car engines. In his free time, he enjoyed boating, scuba diving, and home-cooked meals. He had a good sense of humor and was known for his traditional values.

Frazer is survived by his four children: Elizabeth Diane Pahlke, Bradley Keith Pahlke, Annette May Hoerbert, and Doris Joy Livergood. He is remembered by his extended family, friends, and colleagues. His family will cherish his memory forever, and the world will never forget his sense of honor to his country. He was cremated at Journey Cremations, according to his wishes on Friday, March 29, 2024. The family is holding a private gathering in his honor on Saturday, April 13, 2024. 

Bernice A. Buchanan (nee Klonowski) passed away on 3/26/24 surrounded by family at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, IL after a battle with leukemia and a brief cardiorespiratory illness. She was born April 9, 1945 in Darmstadt, Germany to Polish parents and immigrated to the United States with her parents and three siblings in 1951, landing in Chicago, IL. Bernice spent her early adult years as a surgical nurse. She met Richard Buchanan in 1970 and married him in 1972. They welcomed their first son in 1973. Short thereafter Bernice focused her energies on raising her family. During this time, she volunteered and worked extensively with the local school and park districts. And she spent a considerable stint as the highly affable clown, “Mrs. B.”, performing at birthday parties, parades, and various community functions. Most recently, her favorite role has been as a proud grandmother to her five grandchildren, supporting them in their widely varied endeavors. In everything she did for the last half-century, she partnered with and was supported by her loving and devoted husband Richard, who misses her dearly. 

She is survived by her husband Richard of nearly 52 years of Buffalo Grove, IL, her sons Gordon (Hanna Stevens) of Iowa City, IA, Lawrence (Samaneh) of Grayslake, IL, and Michael of Buffalo Grove, IL, grandchildren Gwendolyn (18), Emily (13), Liana (18), Abigail (16), and Tyler (12) Buchanan, brother Lawrence Klonowski (Eileen) of Dyer, IN, sisters Lucy Emerle of Hattiesburg, MS and Cecelia Dabkowski (John) of Scottsdale, AZ, brothers-in-law David Buchanan (Linda Christian) of Delavan, WI and Robert Buchanan of Wheeling, IL, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She is predeceased by her father, Frank Klonowski, mother, Kunegunda Klonowski (nee Giza), father-in-law, Gordon Buchanan, mother in-law Ada Buchanan (nee Larson), sister in-law Adelia Hopp (nee Buchanan), and brother in-law, Emil Emerle. 

There will be a memorial service in her honor in the coming months. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of the donor’s choice in Bernice’s honor. Inquiries regarding the memorial service can be made to her son, Gordon Buchanan (gordonbuchanan401@gmail.com).

William Louis Stark Sr., born January 30, 1957, passed away peacefully on March 23rd at home with his children and loved ones by his side. He gained the respect and admiration of all his children who watched him courageously fight a 3-year battle with cancer with bravery and tenacity.

He is the son of Luis Marion and Marilyn Jean Stark (Behringer). He left surviving 2 brothers, Michael and George Stark. His 5 loving children, Pamela (Todd) Overstreet , Amy Stark, William (Christina) Stark, John (Gina) Stark and Dylan Kraft. His grandchildren, Jamie (DeMarcus) Johnson, Samantha Stark, Sarah (Nauvella) Robertson, Marc (Dynasty) Kraimer, Sabrina Stark and Robert John Stark. He also leaves behind 9 great grandchildren. He is also leaves his girlfriend Andrea Weisenborn whom he shared a special love with.

Joan Reed, age 87, passed away peacefully in Northwest Community Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born and raised in Howell, MI, the daughter of Robert B. and Isobel (Adams) Mac Donald. She knew her beloved husband Gerald “Jerry” Reed since she was 4 years old. 

Following high school, Joan graduated as an airline hostess, but her true passion was in the banking industry where she excelled in numerous positions including loan officer. As their moves took them to various communities in Illinois, Georgia, and Tennessee, Joan also worked in the accounting department of various medical offices.

Joan and Jerry were married on February 4, 1961 and were blessed with one son, Thomas (Tom). In 1975 they adopted their second son, Timothy (Tim), from Seoul, South Korea. Prior to adopting Tim, Joan and Jerry were foster parents to 8 children while living in Arlington Heights. During their time in Arlington Heights they were members of FUMCAH and Joan was instrumental in starting the church’s nursery.

While they lived in GA and TN, one of Joan’s most treasured activities was driving with Jerry through the Great Smoky Mountains and attending concerts featuring Southern Gospel Quartets. She opened and operated a specialty gift store, and also enjoyed working with friends on numerous projects and activities at the various churches they attended. In addition, she was honored and proud to be a Charter Member of the Cornerstone UMC in Newnan, GA.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents and younger sister, Barbara. She is survived by Jerry, her husband of 63 years; son Tom and his wife Janet; son Tim and his wife Nohemi; grandchildren Brandon and his wife Jenna, and Melanie; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

A receiving of friends and family will be held on Sunday, April 28th from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights, 1903 E. Euclid Ave., followed by a Celebration of Love, Life, and Resurrection Ceremony. Internment will take place in the Resurrection Garden at the church immediately following the Ceremony. A time of fellowship for everyone will be held in FUMCAH’s Gathering Place following the Internment Ceremony. (Note: The family encourages casual attire for the Visitation, Service and Fellowship.)
